Have a regular (every 6 months) Professional Hygienist Clean.
Regular visits to a hygienist combined with dental check-ups and looking after your teeth and gums at home will greatly improve the appearance of your teeth and your oral health.

This will reduce your dental filling costs and reduce the likelihood of losing any teeth. With more adult teeth being lost through gum disease rather than tooth decay, regular professional teeth cleaning is essential to keep your gums and teeth healthy.

A Hygiene clean is the best way to remove Bad Bacteria from your mouth. Bad bacteria in the mouth cause Gum Disease and holes that need fillings. The most common reason losing a tooth is bad gums, or Gum disease. The bone around your tooth roots shrivels away because of Bad Bacteria living deep in your gums. They make poisons that damage the Gum and Bone that surrounds the roots of your teeth. So consistent cleaning keeps the Bad Bacteria out of your mouth.

At Alba we offer a range of hygienist services including scale and polish treatments, preventative fluoride applications, and cosmetic stain-removing brightening treatments.

A Hygienist has more specialised equipment and can provide a more focused and thorough clean, which is hard to achieve at home with a tooth brush & floss. Hygiene equipment is built to remove the build-up of Bad Bacteria on the teeth removing the stubborn plaque and Calculus (sometimes called Tartar). Hygienists can also give advice on which mouth rinses & brushing techniques will keep the Bacteria level at zero or at least at low levels.

If it’s your First Visit, the appointment may take a little longer than if you are having a maintenance cleaning every 6 months.

A full clean may be needed if you’ve not had time to keep your brushing consistent and it’s been a year or two since you had a professional hygiene clean.  Once your mouth Bacteria are under control, normal brushing at home will be sufficient and you can revert to a 6 or 12 month Regular clean.

During the appointment, your hygienist will do the follow procedures:

  • An initial dental hygiene examination and check for signs of gum disease such as gum pockets, bleeding and Plaque build-up. The Hygienist may record a detailed analysis of each tooth root as a reference going forward, so that healing can be tracked following any treatment. If they spot signs of gum disease, they will recommend a referral to Dr Harris for advice and further treatment.
  • Scale your teeth to remove any plaque or tartar build-up in those areas brushing cannot reach.
  • Perform a polish to remove any superficial stains on your teeth .The polish will make your teeth shiny and smooth so the Bacteria will literally slide off the tooth surface. This will keep your mouth healthy.
  • Offer tailored advice on how to maintain good dental health and demonstrate techniques you can use at home.
  • Hygienists can also offer advice about diet and preventing tooth decay.
  • Advice on Tooth colour and Teeth Whitening treatments.

If you are an average healthy person who cleans teeth regularly, flosses daily and eats healthy low sugar diet, you may only need to see a hygienist once or twice a year.

It depends on several factors:

  1. Tartar Build up
Some people are prone to form a lot of tartar( Calculus), particularly on the lower front teeth. This calcified material harbours bacteria that cause inflammation and bleeding gums. You cannot remove calculus by brushing your teeth and needs to be professionally removed by the hygienist every 6 months.
  2. Lifestyle, Diet and Stains
If you frequently drink tea coffee, red wine, black cola drinks or you smoke or vape, you may notice brown stains accumulating on your teeth. You may want to get these polished off every 3 or 4 months to keep your teeth white.Did you know frequent pool chlorine can stain teeth?Swimmers can experience discoloured front teeth. This is because pools have a high pH level that stains teeth brown.
  3. Gum problems
If it has been established you have gum damage and bone lost from around your teeth roots from a disease process (gingivitis and periodontal disease), it is critical to have your teeth cleaned every 3-6 months to prevent Bad Bacteria building up.Your dentist or gum specialist may recommend that you visit the hygienist regularly.
  4. Home Care problems
Seeing the hygienist is important, but you also need to look after your teeth at home to make sure they stay clean and healthy. Regular brushing and flossing are essential for keeping a healthy mouth.Lots of people think they know how to brush their teeth well, but really, they’re missing some key steps which could be vital for maintaining good oral health. If you have dexterity problems, the hygienist can suggest ways to help. Electric toothbrushes are an excellent tool for you or a carer to use. Recommendation 3-4 monthly visits
  5. Too Busy – Too Tired – Can’t be Bothered
This sounds harsh but we do sometimes hear this.
Make time to Brush before bedtime.
2 Minutes out of your day is not much.
Homecare Suggestion: Brush in the shower before bed if you are really short of time, so the plaque and bacteria don’t sit on your teeth and cause havoc all night while you sleep.
A hygienist can’t be a substitute for daily care, however you could come in once a month and it would help maintain health.
  6. One off Clean just before Dental Treatment
Your dentist may recommend that you see a Hygienist for a thorough clean before having braces put on or an Invisalign scan.Or if you are beginning a complex dental treatment such as Porcelain Veneers or dental implants to reduce bacteria levels so your gums are very healthy. Bleeding inflamed gums interfere negatively with the dental treatment. Recommendation 1- 2 weeks before the procedure
  7. You just Love the Feel of Polished Teeth
The frequency of visits will be determined by your needs but also by your own personal desire to have your teeth cleaned and polished regularly. Teeth always feel so nice and smooth after a polish. We recommend every 2- 6 months
